Preparation is the key to a good job

When considering a painting or wallpapering project, most people focus on colours, patterns and finishing the walls. But a good decorator will tell you that actually painting or papering is only half the job in getting professional results.

In fact, realistically for every hour you spend painting or wallpapering, you probably need to spend about 3 hours preparing your walls ceilings and woodwork.....

Wall finishing

After removing wallpaper and/or patching cracks and holes, the entire area is lightly sanded down then refinished to the customers specification. In cases where the wall surface has bumps in the plaster work or is very rough, the walls will have to be lined with a quality lining paper then either painted with two coats of emulsion or papered.

Woodwork

Before painting or staining wood trim, the surface is prepared to accept the new finish. On new wood, that won't involve much more than filling in exposed nail holes and lightly sanding the wood.

On surfaces that have been already painted, it will involve washing the surface with sugar soap, filling any gaps and cracks, then sanding off. All exposed areas of wood will be spot primed, then an undercoat is applied before finishing with top coat. In some cases it may be necessary to apply two coats of undercoat.
